It’s been five days since my husband tested positive for Covid. Since then, the entire family has been testing daily, I have been sleeping on the futon couch in my study, and he has been lonely in his isolation. His symptoms were mild (haven’t we all been tired all the time since this damnable virusContinue reading “July 22 Day 866: Isolation Complete”

July 17 Day 861: Just When You Think It’s All Over
I’ve been thinking it might be time to morph this blog, Math in the Time of Corona, into something new. After all, it’s been 861 days since my first emergency remote class was taught March 9, 2020. Vaccines have been created, debated, and updated. Masks are no longer mandated. People are venturing out on delayedContinue reading “July 17 Day 861: Just When You Think It’s All Over”
June 10 Day 824: Mathematical Celebration
Behold the amazing UW Tacoma students gathering to celebrate their achievements after an unexpectedly difficult academic year. Tacoma grit? They’ve shown it. I couldn’t be more proud to gather in community and celebrate their accomplishments. Today was the official last day of the spring quarter, marked by a celebration of UW Tacoma math students andContinue reading “June 10 Day 824: Mathematical Celebration”
April 7 Day 760: A Conference Deferred
I am so over virtual conferences. It’s hard to motivate myself to attend and focus. Based on the attendance I am seeing at some of the sessions today, I’m not the only person feeling this way. The big January Math Meeting (AKA JMM2022) didn’t happen in January because of the omicron variant. Joining math friendsContinue reading “April 7 Day 760: A Conference Deferred”
April 5 Day 758: Spring Green
Trees along the boulevard are blooming. The color is the chartreuse of new growth that is only found at the start of Spring. With spring comes hope— time for our winter hibernation and COVID isolation to cease. I am ready to re-emerge and return to a more familiar way of life. And yet, there areContinue reading “April 5 Day 758: Spring Green”
March 14 Day 736: My Wish
Whether you love it or hate it, Pi Day is a favorite day of mine because it is also my birthday. So what do I wish for on this, my third, birthday affected by the coronavirus? World peace. That’s a hard one to deliver on right now but I can make the wish. A returnContinue reading “March 14 Day 736: My Wish”
March 12 Day 734: Section Reflection
Congratulations to the MAA SE Section on their Centennial. It was an honor to celebrate this milestone at their Spring 2022 meeting hosted by Berry College. The signage was impressive—from the huge welcome at the entrance to the wayfinding signs throughout, there was never a doubt where to go next. This was their first in-personContinue reading “March 12 Day 734: Section Reflection”
March 9 Day 731: Where Were You?
Are you aware that for me, this is the first day of the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Where were you two years ago today? I was teaching my first class of the pandemic. (March 9 Day 1: Where Were the Students?) It was a Monday and UW Chancellor Ana Mari Cauce called forContinue reading “March 9 Day 731: Where Were You?”
March 8 Day 730: A Truly Hybrid Conference
Congratulations to Fred Hoffman, Maria Provost, Jeanne Cimillo, and Stephen Locke for putting together the 53rd Southeastern International Conference on Combinatorics, Graph Theory, and Computing. It is the first truly hybrid conference I have attended. They went all in with technology, and have achieved what others only dream about. Let me explain. This is theContinue reading “March 8 Day 730: A Truly Hybrid Conference”
March 6 Day 728: Out and About
I flew from Washington to Florida today to attend the 53rd Southeastern International Conference on Combinatorics, Graph Theory , and Computing. It’s a hybrid conference with 242 attendees (at least according to the Whova app) of which about 100 are attending in person. Arriving at Fort Lauderdale felt like another world. The airport was crowded.Continue reading “March 6 Day 728: Out and About”
