March 10 Day 732: Return to the East

The sun is setting to the west as I return east after spending less than 24 hours at home. Some people (my husband included), thought I was crazy for making the trek across the country on two consecutive days. I know I could have taught today’s class remotely and the hopped a plane from FortContinue reading “March 10 Day 732: Return to the East”

March 8 Day 730: A Truly Hybrid Conference

Congratulations to Fred Hoffman, Maria Provost, Jeanne Cimillo, and Stephen Locke for putting together the 53rd Southeastern International Conference on Combinatorics, Graph Theory, and Computing. It is the first truly hybrid conference I have attended. They went all in with technology, and have achieved what others only dream about. Let me explain. This is theContinue reading “March 8 Day 730: A Truly Hybrid Conference”

March 6 Day 728: Out and About

I flew from Washington to Florida today to attend the 53rd Southeastern International Conference on Combinatorics, Graph Theory , and Computing. It’s a hybrid conference with 242 attendees (at least according to the Whova app) of which about 100 are attending in person. Arriving at Fort Lauderdale felt like another world. The airport was crowded.Continue reading “March 6 Day 728: Out and About”

December 21 Day 653: Mileage Run Part 3

Mission Completion! Gold status has been verified in the Alaska Airline app and I got to meet my son AT THE GATE on his holiday travels home. The last time I did that was when the kids were travelling as unaccompanied minors to visit my parents in TN. I have fond memories of childhood waitingContinue reading “December 21 Day 653: Mileage Run Part 3”

December 21 Day 653: Mileage Run Part 2

I can’t believe how lucky I am so far today. I picked San Fransisco as my destination mostly for price, time, and distance. But if I knew then what I know now, I would have paid extra to pick this location. Imagine my delight to walk off the airplane and happen upon this gallery withContinue reading “December 21 Day 653: Mileage Run Part 2”

December 21 Day 653: Mileage Run Part 1

This is my gift to myself — one final airplane trip in 2021 simply to accrue enough frequent flyer mileage points to advance to the next level. Just a hop to San Francisco and back with lounge access for the day, earning the final miles needed to become gold. Is it worth it? Absolutely, ifContinue reading “December 21 Day 653: Mileage Run Part 1”

December 4 Day 636: The Wisdom of Presidents

Today in the White House Visitor’s Center, I spied these words from Chester A. Arthur. Little did he know that these words would be relevant to every person living through the 2020-2021 Corona Virus Lockdown. I was grateful for the chance to explore my country’s capital on a beautiful fall Saturday before flying home toContinue reading “December 4 Day 636: The Wisdom of Presidents”

December 2 Day 634: Ups and Downs

There were so many times things started to go wrong today and in the end, everything worked out just fine. I got up early to take the morning flight from SEA to DCA. The highway was crowded. Cars were moving at a crawl. I wasn’t worried, because I always allow for plenty of extra time.Continue reading “December 2 Day 634: Ups and Downs”
