This was going to be a post about the specialness of Tacoma, Lunar New Year celebrations, and the quest for monkeyshine glory. TL/DR lots of rogues, no official glass, but I ran into a pop-up craft market on Saturday where I purchased a glass dragon’s egg. I still hope to find glass in the wild, but that is all this dragon needs.

Yet it all feels hollow. A few hours ago, I learned that my brother-in-law, Jack Sevard Martin, Jr., departed from this plane of existence. For six months, he was hospitalized and fighting infection. There were moments of hope and moments of despair. My husband and I visited when he was heavily sedated but with hope for improvement; when he was aware, angry, and unpleasant; and when he was awake but not present.
Through out it all, his son and daughter-in-law were rocks. They advocated for appropriate care and made the right decision when the time came. I have known Justin since his teenage years—he has become a far more honorable man than I ever imagined. And should he read this, I hope he interprets the previous statement as the compliment I truly mean it to be.
Jack was a water dragon. Being the weekend of the Lunar New
Year, I looked up some attributes of the Water Dragon, which seem quite apt:
- Water Dragons are strong-minded and determined to do well in whatever they try, which comes to them quite naturally.
- They are a little perfectionist and will always try to maintain their high standards.
- The Water Dragon Chinese Zodiac is going to criticize anyone who tries to make a fool of them extremely quickly.
- Sometimes, they can be considered blunt and direct, and they are certainly not diplomatic or sensitive.
- Water Dragon may be pretty insane and often believe what people say. Water Dragon cannot take insult lightly.
Seems pretty accurate from my perspective.
Jack was always kind and generous. My sons, especially Anson (a metal dragon himself who shared a passion for history), adored him.
Dear Jack,
Please know that I will look after your brother. He will not be alone. And together we will help Justin, Caitlin, and Connor in your absence. We will always miss you. And we love you.
From one dragon to another. XOXOX,
Jenny
So sorry for your family’s loss, Jenny.
