September 30 Day 1301: A Room with a View

The first week of classes has ended. Things are beginning to feel more normal. Most of my colleagues are teaching in person. All that is good.

My brother-in-law has not been well for quite a while. So today Mark and I went for a visit…to Southern California. We set our alarm for 3:45 am made our way to the Seattle-Tacoma airport. The flight was delayed an hour; we arrived at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach by 11 am. We spent 6 hours with Jack.

It is hard to see someone you love having such a difficult time. The good news: he is receiving excellent care and he was responsive to Mark’s stories. We believe he was trying to talk. At one point Mark said, “You’d tell me if you wanted me to stop, right?” And we both swear we heard a response of “Right”.

The view from his room was incredible. And there was an air show over the water today. Too bad that Jack wasn’t in a position to see it.

I’m glad we came. It’s 7 pm and we are sitting in the airplane ready to head home.

Tired but worth it.
