June 28 Day 842: We All Went Down to Amster….

You know you are in Amsterdam when you spot the canals, windmills, and bicycles. We finally made it! Just three days and one hour late but we are here.

The hotel is lovely. The schedule has been rearranged. It is going to be a visit to remember.

The title is an homage to a misremembered childhood song. Each time the last syllable was sung, it would become louder and more boisterous. It was apparently banned by the Boy Scouts. Perhaps you sang some version of it as a kid too. Here are the official lyrics:

There Were Three Jolly Fishermen

1. There were three jolly fishermen.
There were three jolly fishermen.
Fisher, fisher, men, men, men.
Fisher, fisher, men, men, men.
There were three jolly fishermen.

2. The first one’s name was Isaac.
The first one’s name was Isaac.
I, saac, saac, saac.
I, saac, saac, saac.
The first one’s name was Isaac.

3. The second one’s name was Jacob.
The second one’s name was Jacob.
Jay, cub, cub, cub.
Jay, cub, cub, cub.
The second one’s name was Jacob.

4. The third one’s name was Abraham.
The third one’s name was Abraham.
Abra, abra, ham, ham, ham.
Abra, abra, ham, ham, ham.
The third one’s name was Abraham.

5. They all went up to Jericho.
They all went up to Jericho.
Jer-i, Jer-i; cho, cho, cho.
Jer-i, Jer-i; cho, cho, cho.
They all went up to Jericho.

6. They should have gone to Amsterdam.
They should have gone to Amsterdam.
Amster, amster, dam, dam, dam.
Amster, amster, dam, dam, dam.
They should have gone to Amsterdam.

7. You mustn’t say that naughty word.
You mustn’t say that naughty word.
Naughty, naughty, word, word, word.
Naughty, naughty, word, word, word.
You mustn’t say that naughty word.

8. They should have gone to Amster-sh.
They should have gone to Amster-sh.
Amster, amster, sh, sh, sh.
Amster, amster, sh, sh, sh.
They should have gone to Amster-sh.

9. I’m gonna say it anyhow.
I’m gonna say it anyhow.
Any, any, how, how, how.
Any, any, how, how, how.
I’m gonna say it anyhow.

10. They should have gone to Amsterdam.
They should have gone to Amsterdam.
Amster, amster, dam, dam, dam.
Amster, amster, dam, dam, dam.
They should have gone to Amsterdam.

Yes this song has been running through my head all day. But I’m glad to be here with Mark and making new friends. It’s definitely the preferred destination.
