January 19 Day 682: Extra Credit Magic

I held in-person drop in hours today at the UW Tacoma Teaching and Learning Center (TLC).

Why the TLC?

It’s neutral ground. My students know that I am there for them—so they cannot be interrupting me. Plus it introduces them to a fantastic place to work, collaborate, get help, or just hang out. For many students this is their first time on campus. Helping them find resources to succeed early in the quarter is critical.

I am offering extra credit to anyone who comes in and asks me a question over the next week and a half. Three people stopped by today, including one I had never seen before. That’s not to say they hadn’t been attending, but they had never shared their camera on zoom. True magic.

I do have an alternate assignment for those that cannot attend my set hours but it requires taking selfies around campus. The locations are:

  • The TLC. I still need to get them to this resource even if I am not there. They are to learn how to use the queuing system to request help for the class, request that help, and take a selfie with the responding tutor.
  • My office door MDS 306D: Selfie with the Pi Mu Epsilon charter
  • A selfie in their favorite on-campus location to study. If they haven’t picked one yet, I urged them to consider checking out the reservable spaces listed here or wander about the Snoqualmie or Tioga buildings.

Let’s see if more magic happens over the coming week.
