April 24 Day 47 Part 2. Zooming for Community

I proclaim this evening’s MAA Zoom Happy Hour a great success. We met friends new and old (from graduate students to HS teachers to retired mathematicians), we shared post-COVID dreams, and we even play together. Francis Su suggested the following game. Each person points in a direction. Follow the arrows until you are stuck.  Then type the final disposition of your path in the group chat. Of course we are playing on a torus. If you write a paper on this problem, every person pictured here needs to be a co-author.

People were not supposed to leave until they shared something for which they were grateful. I called out intentional community building–within my neighborhood, within my institution, and within the MAA. We may be physically distant but we are coming together to support one other.

There is another MAA Member Happy Hour coming soon. Please join us again May 1. Look for the invitation on connect.maa.org. I hear there may be card tricks and games.
