Hello friends. It’s been a while since I’ve written. Maybe that’s because the stated purpose of this blog was to get through the pandemic whole, healthy, and sane as we madly raced to figure out new technologies, new methods of engagement, and new students—while maintaining our humanity.
Corona is still here but the urgency has subsided. The constraints requiring intense adaptability, creativity, and growth have faded. We still need humanity. We still need mathematics. But Math in the Time of Corona is not quite the right title anymore.
And SO MUCH has changed for me professionally. I completed my leadership role with the Mathematical Association of America in 2023, knowing that I wanted to continue impactful mission-driven work.
I’m still pinching myself. I can’t believe that I got hired as the executive director of the Seattle Universal Math Museum in Spring 2024. It is a job that I never knew existed and I have been preparing for my whole life. Mathematics, communication, creativity, administration, leadership—I bring it all. I’m still learning about everything nonprofit. If learning keeps you young, I feel like a teenager again.
So long story short, I’ve taken a huge leap into the unknown at a time when others may be coasting towards retirement. My personal mission to make mathematics accessible, appreciated, and humane guides my decisions everyday at an organization dedicated to sparking each and every person to love math.
And that means rebranding this blog. I haven’t fully committed to a new title but I’m toying with Math Belongs to Us.
What do you think?
So here we are—still needing math, still needing each other. I hope you’ll keep joining me as I grow while developing a vibrant math museum and learn what it means to live in a world where math belongs to all of us.
Delighted that you are re-engaging with your wonderful blog to share your insights, knowledge and enthusiasm.
