June 18 Day 1197: SciArt Celebration

It was the fourth day of the American Society of Microbiology’s annual Microbe conference in Houston, TX. I walked the exhibit floor as a guest. It’s very different than the math conferences that I am used to. Big money. Precision equipment. Fancy swag.

In my world, the one of mathematical conferences, related art exhibits are part of the exhibit hall. But here, the art exhibit was offsite in an actual art gallery. Beautifully installed and well attended (especially considering many people have started to head home already), we celebrated scientists and their science inspired art.

I really enjoyed the crafting table where we crossed stitched using yarn, huge needles, and pipette tip boxes. Others worked on biology themed creations. I tried for a hypercube.

Mark and I won first prize for our agar art collaboration “Luminaries of Microbiology” featuring biologists Rosalind Franklin, Esther Lederberg, Rita Colwell, and Jennifer Doudna. I feel very fortunate to be recognized together with my husband. It wouldn’t be possible without his microbe wrangling skills.
