March 18 Day 1105: Just a Regular Member

This weekend was the MAA Pacific Northwest Section Spring Meeting at George Fox University in Newberg, OR. We enjoyed clear warm weather and uplifting mathematical talks.

Usually at MAA Section meetings I have one or more obligations—whether giving a talk, participating on a panel, running a workshop, or attending executive committee meetings. Today, I had none of that. I could just catch-up with professional friends, support my students and colleagues, and enjoy the terrific line-up of plenary and contributed speakers.

What made this meeting special was that I attended with two UW Tacoma seniors, Phil Dontje and Franco Carlos. They spoke in the afternoon session on their senior capstone projects and did a wonderful job.

This is the start of my “Spring Meeting Season.” There are three more events to attend where I will be much busier (including the last of the invitations postponed because of COVID.) I love each opportunity to gather in community and celebrate mathematics.

I come away refreshed and eager to try new ideas.
