August 3 Day 513: Raise Your Hand If…

I got the nicest compliment today. The opening warm-up activity of MAA Congress was organized by Emille Lawrence. It was versatile in that it worked beautifully in the virtual environment and will translate nicely to an in-person space (even with masks on.)

As Emille revealed each line in the slide above, representatives in Congress raised their virtual hand accordingly. She would call on one or two people to introduce themselves and provide more details to their answers. The questions were great. The responses were better. And it was an inspiring way to begin a marathon day of virtual board meetings.

Can you tell which question these hands are raised in response to? Please select your best answer in the poll that follows.

So what was the compliment? In the transition between Emille’s presentation and my Presidential report to the Congress, I congratulated Emille on her activity. Her response, “As I was planning, I kept asking myself, ‘what would Jenny Quinn do?'”

You can be sure, Jenny Quinn will be doing this activity in the future. Thanks Emille. Great job.

    1. I treat my meetings like I treat my classroom. What is the desired outcome and how can I actively involve those present to achieve that outcome? The rest is experiment, experience, and enthusiasm.
