Reflection, listening, learning, and action.
I have been a member of the Tacoma STEAM Learning Collaborative Action Network for the past three years. We are dedicated to expanding equitable access, interest, experience, and success in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) for all Tacoma students, particularly girls, students of color, and those impacted by poverty. At today’s final meeting for the 2019-2020 academic year, achievements were celebrated, summer work plans and programs announced, and supports for the coming (post?)-COVID year imagined.
I am particularly grateful for network manager, Chanel Hall. She honestly and compassionately leads. Neither of us particularly like confrontation, so her direct request really resonated with me, “All I ask is that you do what you can to support our black and brown students.”
If anyone is interested in collaborating with our Network, we would welcome you with open arms—provided you have on a face mask and remain 6-feet distant. But you know what I mean.
